Once again Norfolk Southern is overhauling a group of older locomotives…. This time it’s the high hoods. Those ancient relics of Dixie roads south of the Mason-Dixon line.

A new program began at the Juniata Shops to rehab and rebuild all of the high hood GP38-2s (most, if not all, of Southern Railway heritage) that aren’t equipped for remote control operations.

The hoods units are being rebuilt with the unique NS short hood and the Admiral Cab at Altoona. So now that you know that the high hoods are disappearing, I’m hear to give you an urgent message…. Get up, get out and go shoot em’ while you still can!
