Weekend Railfanning Episode 21: Monster Manifests!… 37T, 11R And 30T Wasn’t Bad Either

Norfolk Southern 37T with 124 cars @ 07:20 a.m….

Rail Hunting isn’t just an occupation, for me, it’s also a sport. So when I heard the crew of Norfolk Southern Train 37T calling out signals around M.P. 679, despite the low light level, I couldn’t resist the thrill of beating him to the 671…. Today was the first day of really cold weather of the season. Around 42 degrees…. Now, I know that it’s gonna’ get much colder than that, but up till now the weather’s been fair at worst.

The sun was still low, but the sky was clear which meant that I’d have enough light by 07:20 a.m. when he stomped upgrade with a whopping 124 cars heading north to Binghamton and other points beyond.

After meeting the 37T in Dalton, a modest 41-car Canadian National 30T made its way downgrade @ 08:50 with a Crescent Cab SD60E #6989 and Canadian National C44-9W #2223 enroute to Enola.

Lastly, at about 10:10 a.m. (and with much better light) Train 11R with another monster-sized manifest of 129 cars (more than 8,000 feet total length) growled “downgrade” with five units. And I do mean growled as you should have heard these units bringing the train down the hill!…

Also, I say lastly for (2) reasons…. because this was the last train I heard over the scanner until much later in the night and also because the last (2) units are of interest…. The #9257 is the next unit up from the “Operation Lifesaver” painted Dash-9s which are numbered #9250-#9256 and the #3470 is a local resident of Binghamton and is probably heading to Enola for routine maintenance.

Norfolk Southern Train 11R is a Binghamton, NY to Enola, Pa. manifest which formerly ran as Canadian Pacific Train 458.

Norfolk Southern Train 14R is a Harrisburg (Enola), Pa. to Binghamton, NY manifest which formerly ran as Canadian Pacific Train 459.

Norfolk Southern Train 30T is a Rouses Point, NY to Harrisburg (Enola) Pa. manifest which formerly ran as Canadian Pacific Train 930.

Norfolk Southern Train 31T is a Harrisburg (Enola) Pa. to Rouses Point, NY manifest which formerly ran as Canadian Pacific Train 931.

Norfolk Southern 37T is an Allentown, Pa. to Buffalo, NY manifest which formerly ran as Canadian Pacific Train 932.
