It’s no longer news about the 100 ex-Union Pacific SD90MACs (numbered #7229-#7328)that NS bought to help satisfy its current motive power needs…. It’s also no longer news that NS plans to rebuild the 100 units into SD70ACUs, essentially SD70ACes….

The old cab will be replaced by EMD’s newest cab and will be completely rewired. Siemens electronics will be replacing the old Mitsubishi ones. And EMD traction motors will replace the Siemens’ traction motors. The engine won’t be touched unless mechanical work on it is needed.

What is news is that after nearly a year of parading around the system in their Armour Yellow livery, the first SD90 to enter into the shops at Juniata, #7299 has emerged completed and in black varnish with whiskers.

This is the beginning of the end of the yellow-skinned EMDs as one-by-one, many more units are expected to follow in the #7299’s footsteps this fall.

2016 is expected to be the last year to see the UP SD90MACs in their original yellow paint and body so get up, get out and go shoot em’ while you still can!
