Unit tank train 65X has rolled through Northeast Pa…. Again. And though empty this time, the 98 black tank cars and 1 Soo Line covered hopper (used as a spacer behind the locomotives) nonetheless carried the train symbol 65X down the Sunbury Crescent and into Enola just like another did on Monday, October 19, 2015 when a Canadian Pacific GE AC4400 and a GEVO bracketed by a Union Pacific GEVO lugged 115 tankers (and 3 spacers).

From Enola the loaded cars appear to going to the Delaware City refinery in Reybold, Delaware which is one of the biggest oil refineries on the East Coast.

PBF Energy, which operates refineries in Delaware City, Paulsboro and other places on the East Coast says that it plans to increase crude by rail and barges.

PBF bought the refinery in 2011 and reopened it in 2012 and began adding facilities to unload oil from trains. The company owns or leases about 4,000 tank cars and has about 1,900 more on order.

From Enola, trains go down the Port Road Branch to Perryville, Md. and then north on Amtrak’s NEC (North East Corridor) before arriving in Delaware. NS has trackage rights over every mile of Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor in Delaware and at the south end of those rights, trains utilize the NEC between Perryville, Md, and Newark, De, to access the Delmarva Secondary connection at DAVIS interlocking.

Delaware City is a quaint, sort of, tourist type town on the Delaware River off of Route 9. The line from Davis Tower off Amtrak (AMTK) to Porter, which then curves south to the Delmarva Peninsula over the C&D Canal is the Delmarva Secondary.

The trains typically enter the Delmarva Secondary and operate south to Porter where they cross the New Castle Secondary on a diamond and enter the Reybold Running Track to access PBF Energy. Once there they may be spotted on the loops for unloading or be put away in the yard.

Stretching from Newark, De. To Pocomoke, Md., the Delmarva Secondary is NS’s primary north-south route on the Delmarva Peninsula.

At present, most oil is moved by pipelines and refiners have been putting their hopes on the Keystone XL project which would carry crude oil from Alberta, Canada, south to refineries along the Gulf Coast. Until that happens refiners and producers are using barges, trucks and trains to move the oil.
