Pan Am Railways – Springfield Terminal Business Cars Heading To Spencer, North Carolina

On Tuesday, May 26 (the day after Memorial Day Monday) while railfanning the West Side I got an unexpected surprise at the end of Train 458…. Pan Am Railways Business Cars #100 & #101.

To say I was stoked (and perplexed) is an understatement…. At the time, I didn’t know what to make of the blue New Englanders but it seems that these cars were on their way to Spencer, NC to participate in some type of train safety event of sorts.

But as fate would have it, this wouldn’t be the last time that I’d see these two at the end of a Train 458…. The next time would be about a month later on June 27, and the circumstances of which wouldn’t be quite as orchestrated….

They were brought down by accident and the cars had to be set out at Taylor Yard to be picked up by the next Binghamton bound manifest.

As I continue to learn about the rail culture and operations of America, along the way I run into (a lot of) things that I can’t always answer in the beginning…. But eventually all of the mysteries of railroading reveal themselves to me and when they do I always say to myself, “So that’s what that was!”
