No, Norfolk Southern isn’t getting rid of the Conrail inherited EMDs however they may alter them from their pure state. Rumor has it that, like their SD90MAC brethren, the 80MACs will eventually enter an extensive rebuild program. This will upgrade the electronic components to SD70ACe specifications and might include newer crash-rated cabs like those on the SD70ACe. They would keep their 20-cylinder EMD 20-710G3B prime movers but would no longer be “pure” SD80MACs. The rebuilding is set to begin in the summer of 2016 after the work on the SD90MACs is done so get up, get out and go shoot the “original” big MACs while you still can!
