Allentown!… The Legendary Yard And The VIRGINIAN & INTERSTATE Heritage Units

Virginian-Heritage-Unit-Allentown-Yard-11-29-2015 (43)

(Above) This shot of the VIRGINIAN Heritage Unit shows one of the few advantages of winter railfanning…. The naked trees opened up the possibility of getting an otherwise unobtainable shot of the black & yellow beauty at the west end of the yard.

(Below) Also visiting Allentown Yard this day was the INTERSTATE Heritage Unit. And while I know that this is NOT a representative photo of the unit, the top of the orange cab and cream hood is all anybody got today as it was parked next to the river, furthest away from the road or cameras (or any hope of getting a clear shot at it). That all being said, the photo does prove that it was there.

Allentown

By Billy Joel

Well we’re living here in Allentown
And they’re closing all the factories down
Out in Bethlehem they’re killing time
Filling out forms
Standing in line
Well our fathers fought the Second World War
Spent their weekends on the Jersey Shore
Met our mothers in the USO
Asked them to dance
Danced with them slow
And we’re living here in Allentown

But the restlessness was handed down
And it’s getting very hard to stay

Well we’re waiting here in Allentown
For the Pennsylvania we never found
For the promises our teachers gave
If we worked hard
If we behaved

So the graduations hang on the wall
But they never really helped us at all
No they never taught us what was real
Iron and coal
And chromium steel
And we’re waiting here in Allentown

But they’ve taken all the coal from the ground
And the union people crawled away

Every child has a pretty good shot
To get at least as far as their old man got
But something happened on the way to that place
They threw an American flag in our place

Well I’m living here in Allentown
And it’s hard to keep a good man down
But I won’t be giving up today

And we’re living here in Allentown

This is Mike who you showed thru the woods for the Virginian. Did not know at the time but there is a hiking trail that leads to the other side of the canal where we could have got a good picture of the Interstate. Maybe this will help for future trips to Allentown.

How’s it going Mike…. That’s good to know and I thank you for that little nugget of info. It will certainly help in the future…. Ironically, I was there in Allentown the very next week but there were no special units so it was a quick couple of drives-by, a stop up in the housing complex to get an overview of the yard and off to Reading we went. This Saturday we’re going to Harrisburg so hopefully there will be a lot going on there.
