It’s Official.. Trains 30T And 31T Are No More

Train 14R which came up on January 19 had 5 locomotives pulling 107 cars and still had trouble making the grades of Yatesville and Clark’s Summit.

Back on January 11, I mentioned that the 30T and 31T would be combined with the 11R and 14R and that there would be no more Train 30T and 31T. (here’s the post in case you missed it).

It seems that my prophecy has come true as evidenced by yesterday’s 14R which came up with 107 cars and the typical 31T makeup of rolling stock. Blocks of Canadian National boxcars, empty ICG flatcars and empty centerbeam cars among other things. So from this point on it seems that the 30T will become part of Train 11R and 31T will be attached to 14R @ Enola, Pa..

I’ve said it many times in the past to shoot what you have today because you don’t know if you’ll have it tomorrow…. If you can recall, the 30T & 31T used to be east-west Allentown, Pa. – Buffalo, NY manifests which started out in June 1, 1999 as Trains 40T and 41T. Around 2005 the script changed and the two became north-south from Montreal to Enola.

Although the 30T/31T are technically not gone, their train numbers will no longer be a part of the Sunbury Line train makeup…. Ending nearly two decades of tradition.

    Is that a new mile post i see in the foreground?

      Unfortunately not…. That milepost belongs to the Delaware-Lackawanna (whose track that is for the next 100 ft. or so). This is the “north” end of the Steamtown wye. And admittedly it’s hard to see, but if you look ‘ever-so-closely’, smack dab between the the nose of Pan Am #608 and the #9346 you can just barely see where NS marked the tie with light blue paint for placement of the new mile markers, adjacent to the old ones. This was done back in early October 2015 (and here’s the post on that in cased you missed it).

      That mile marker is “new” though having been put there on August 19, 2015. Don’t worry, a lot of us were fooled when it happened because the mileage is about right for the Harrisburg hub and it seemed a little too classy for the D-L (LOL). That and the fact that the railroad itself (all lines included) is only 88 miles. I think that they’re measuring the distance of the original DL&W line from North Jersey to Scranton which would make 134 miles about right.

    Makes sense, I grew up right next to the Ashmore NS secondary in Hazleton. Right near the house was milepost 145 and one day the local stopped at the Wendys across the street I asked them how they got the mile post (was in my teens and just learning the past rail history in the area). The mileage starts in Jersey City and works west on the old Lehigh Valley main and continues up the secondary into Hazleton. I’m waiting too see see how NS mileposts are numbered on Sunbury. Also I caught 14R with 8 locomotives Friday evening and wondered why until I saw your article thanks for the info!

      Anytime…. Glad I could help…. I heard about the 14R on Friday night. Had about 40 cars and a couple of Canadian Pacifics in the mix from what I was told…. Was in Harrisburg that day so I missed it by about an hour. I did catch the 11R that it met @ Dalton which had 2 SD80MACs #7209 and #7205.

    I caught both on Friday in Moosic, 14R came through about 6pm had the first 5 units NS (7525,8878,9366,7587,3422,and 3 CP 9543,8500,8739) 11R had the 7208 and 7205 rolled throught at about 8:15PM

      Are you sure it wasn’t the #7209?… Wanna’ make sure that my records are right…. I couldn’t see the numbers but I could see that they were SD80MACs…. The friend I was with called out #7209 and #7205…. Just wannna’ make sure.

    100% sure, I even rewatched the video I got to make sure. My girlfriend writes all the units when they pass I keep a log too lol
