Herzog ballast Train #930 heading north to Binghamton (and beyond?) on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 @ 06:59 a.m..

Norfolk Southern work Train 930 (Herzog ballast train) made its way up through northeastern Pa. in the early hours of Tuesday morning with 75 heavily loaded hoppers behind three GE Dash-9s (#9145, #9036 & #9355). The locomotives made their way past M.P. 671 with prime movers screaming and by the time the last cars made their way past my vantage point, the grade to Clark’s Summit had clearly taken its toll on the locomotives and had severely cut into the trains speed.

Near the top of the grade (at around M.P. 666-664) the train stalled as the locomotives were getting too hot. “By the grace of God,” the conductors words, not mine, the engineer was able to get the train moving again and eventually up and over the summit.

The train returned empty to Enola the next morning behind the same diesel lash-up. There’s been rumors circulating about NS replacing sidings that Canadian Pacific tore out on the Freight Line between Binghamton and Albany, NY to run more traffic. And if there’s any truth to any of these rumors, than it’s a good possibility that that’s where the loaded cars were heading.

I can say from personal observation that there’s a lot of substance to these rumors as just ten days ago an NS welded rail train #916 went north to Binghamton and over the weeks dozens of gondola cars filled with new crossties have also gone north to B-Town.

On a personal note, it was a little nostalgic hearing the “930” and “931” train symbols on the Sunbury Line again. If you’ll recall, CP used these same designations for the NS Trains 30T and 31T, themselves no longer in use on the Sunbury Line.

The same ballast train with the same power returning empty to Enola (and beyond?) the next morning of April 20, 2016 @ 07:55 a.m..
