The Weekend 49: More Freight & Monster Manifests

NS-Train-37T-5-1-2016 (5)

Train 37T is making a rare afternoon appearance @ 2:18 p.m. with 134 cars to lug up to Binghamton, NY. Almost 8 hours earlier its sister Train 36T went down the line to Allentown, Pa. with 101 cars and its Extra counterpart, Train W7T came up with 59 cars to go to Binghamton having dropped off 39 cars on Penobscot Mountain for the Reading & Northern.

Ever since Norfolk Southern took over the D&H South Line last year, railfans in Northeastern Pa. have been waiting eagerly to see an increase in train traffic…. It seems now that with the warm weather on the horizon, their wishes are being fulfilled.

On April 4, new trains to the Sunbury, 10A and 11A made their maiden voyages across the Sunbury Line rails to and from their new connections in Binghamton, NY. And just a few days ago loaded coal Train 532 rumbled its way up from Enola to a point north that’s most likely Johnson City (Binghamton), NY or Bow, NH. And then there’s yet another new train number 11Z (possibly the new 11R) that’s been plying the line southbound for the last three days as I write this.

Add to all of this, Trains 36T and 37T (formerly 13T and 12T) have both behemoth-ed into triple-digit car manifests pushing upwards of 7,000 feet in length. I can remember this time last year when these same trains typically ran with 25-65 cars on average…. Now they’re running in addition to Extras W6T and W7T to handle all of the traffic.

36T and 37T picked up the duties of the Canadian Pacific 258 and 259 when CP left the region and with Train 309 and 310 being routed all the way to Binghamton instead of Elmira, I speculate that it’s affected the 36T and 37T respectively.

Train 11R (which may now be 11Z) has been a monster of a train for months routinely exceeding 10,000 feet in length.

So how does the saying go?… “April showers bring May flowers.” When it comes to train activity and what we can expect to see in Northeast Pa. in the days ahead I think the mantra’s more like, “Winter lows bring summer highs!
