Norfolk Southern Train 14R with #1111 (Bar Code unit) and a Mid-Train DPU

Columbus Day 2019 brought several treats for local railfans.. Today’s Train 14R had not only the NS #1111 (Bar Code unit) leading the diesel entourage, but also had a mid-train DPU in the form of NS ES44DC #7705! The train was pretty much a unit tank train say for the few general freight cars following the DPU..

After years of struggling to get heavy tonnage over Clark’s Summit it seems that NS is finally getting with the program.. My guess is that this was a test train.. As NS continues to adopt Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR) and implement its TOP21 operating plan for 2019 and beyond, I think that NS is gearing for even bigger changes in 2020.. Time will tell.

Over on the Delaware Lackawanna five of their vintage Alcos, including 3 six-axles, lugged in a whopping 78 heavily laden cars up from Taylor Yard on the day’s Train DL-3.. The D-L tonnage and revenue continues to rise after a slow down in 2016.. Today, their train lengths and weights are par with those of NS itself.
