Though the company’s roots are in the shortline Genesee and Wyoming Railroad and the Salt mine it served in Retsof, NY. The Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (not to be confused with the railroad) is a short-line railroad holding company that owns or maintains interests in 120 railroads throughout five countries (the United States, Canada, Australia, Belgium, and the Netherlands), and operates more than 15,000 miles of owned and leased track and more than 3,000 miles under additional track-access arrangements. After railroad deregulation by the Staggers Act of 1980, the G&W began acquiring short lines scattered across the U.S. between 1985 and 1996 and soon after began acquiring railroads in other countries in 1997.
